COT Data

Read institutional positioning and act on smart money signals before the market moves

What is COT Data?

The Commitment of Traders (COT) report is published every Friday by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It reveals how the three major groups of futures market participants are positioning themselves: Commercials (hedgers), Large Speculators (institutional traders), and Small Speculators (retail traders).

Our COT Data feature takes this raw CFTC data and turns it into actionable trading signals. Instead of downloading spreadsheets and calculating indicators manually, you get interactive charts, color-coded signals, and divergence alerts โ€” all updated weekly when new COT data is released.

"Commercials are the smartest money in the market. When they're heavily on one side and retail traders are on the other, the market almost always follows the commercials. COT data shows you exactly when that divergence is happening."

Why COT Data Matters

๐Ÿฆ Read Smart Money Flow

Commercial traders (banks, hedgers) have the deepest market knowledge. Their positioning reveals where large institutional capital is flowing before prices fully reflect it.

๐Ÿ“Š Spot Extremes Early

When speculators are heavily piled on one side, the trade is crowded. COT data tells you when the market is set up for a reversal โ€” before it happens.

๐ŸŽฏ Confirm Your Trade Thesis

Use COT positioning as a macro filter. If your technical setup aligns with smart money flow, you're trading with the strongest possible tailwind.

โšก Weekly Edge

Most retail traders ignore COT data entirely. Understanding institutional positioning gives you a structural edge that compounds over time.

The Three Trader Groups

Understanding who's doing what is the foundation of COT analysis. Each group has a fundamentally different relationship to the market:

Group Who They Are How to Trade Them
Commercials Banks, hedgers, producers. They trade to protect existing business positions. Deep market knowledge and long time horizons. Follow them. When commercials are heavily long, it's bullish. When heavily short, it's bearish. They're usually right.
Large Speculators Asset managers, CTAs, hedge funds. They trade for profit and tend to be trend followers. Often heavily positioned in the prevailing trend. Fade them at extremes. When large specs are extremely bullish, the trend may be exhausted. Their extreme positioning often marks tops or bottoms.
Small Speculators Retail traders, smaller funds. They follow trends but are typically late to position and quick to panic. Fade them at extremes. Small speculators piling into one side is often a contrarian signal. They're frequently the last ones in before a reversal.

WILLCO: The Core Indicator

WILLCO is a 26-week stochastic oscillator that normalizes each trader group's net position relative to open interest, then measures where the current reading sits within the last 26 weeks of data.

How WILLCO is Calculated

Three separate WILLCO values are calculated โ€” one for each trader group:

  1. Calculate the Ratio: Net Position รท Open Interest (normalizes for market size)
  2. Find the 26-week range: Highest and lowest ratio over the past 26 weeks
  3. Apply the stochastic formula: ((Current Ratio โˆ’ Lowest) รท (Highest โˆ’ Lowest)) ร— 100

The result is a value from 0 to 100. Values near 0 mean the group is at their most bearish in 26 weeks. Values near 100 mean they're at their most bullish.

Reading the Signals

Group Signal Logic BUY Signal SELL Signal
Commercials Follow WILLCO โ‰ฅ 75% WILLCO โ‰ค 25%
Large Specs Fade at extremes WILLCO โ‰ค 20% (they're bearish โ†’ buy) WILLCO โ‰ฅ 80% (they're bullish โ†’ sell)
Small Specs Fade at extremes WILLCO โ‰ค 20% (they're bearish โ†’ buy) WILLCO โ‰ฅ 80% (they're bullish โ†’ sell)

Our platform displays these signals automatically in the Action column of the historical table โ€” BUY, SELL, or neutral โ€” so you never have to calculate thresholds manually.

Divergence Score: Smart Money vs. Dumb Money

The Divergence Score is our flagship indicator. It quantifies the gap between what Commercials are doing versus what Speculators are doing in a single number.

The Formula

Divergence Score = Commercial WILLCO โˆ’ Average(Large Spec WILLCO, Small Spec WILLCO)

What the Number Means

Score Range Signal Strength What It Means
+60 or higher Maximum Bullish Smart money heavily long, specs heavily short. Expect a strong rally.
+40 to +60 Strong Bullish Clear bullish divergence. High-confidence long bias.
+20 to +40 Moderate Bullish Bullish lean, but not extreme enough for high conviction.
-20 to +20 No Divergence All groups roughly aligned. No strong COT signal either way.
-40 to -20 Moderate Bearish Bearish lean, but not extreme enough for high conviction.
-60 to -40 Strong Bearish Clear bearish divergence. High-confidence short bias.
-60 or lower Maximum Bearish Smart money heavily short, specs heavily long. Expect a sharp decline.

An interactive tooltip on the Divergence Score display walks you through the full interpretation scale directly in the app.

Triple Extreme Setup

The Triple Extreme is the most powerful setup in COT analysis. It occurs when all three trader groups hit opposing extremes at the same time:

  • Commercials at their most bullish (WILLCO > 75) AND Large Specs at their most bearish (WILLCO < 20) AND Small Specs at their most bearish (WILLCO < 20) โ†’ Strong Bullish Setup
  • Commercials at their most bearish (WILLCO < 25) AND Large Specs at their most bullish (WILLCO > 80) AND Small Specs at their most bullish (WILLCO > 80) โ†’ Strong Bearish Setup

The platform automatically detects Triple Extreme conditions and flags them on the symbol detail page with a confidence score (0-100).

How to Browse COT Data

Step 1: Navigate to COT Data

Click COT Data in the main navigation. You'll see all available symbols organized in a searchable grid.

Step 2: Filter by Category

Use the category dropdown to filter by:

  • Financials โ€” Stock index futures (ES, NQ, YM, etc.), Treasury futures, currencies
  • Commodities โ€” Energy, metals, agriculturals
  • Crypto โ€” Bitcoin, Ethereum futures

Step 3: Search for a Symbol

Type a symbol code or name in the search bar to find a specific market quickly.

Step 4: Open a Symbol

Click any symbol card to see the full analysis: interactive chart, divergence score, triple extreme detection, position velocity, and the complete historical data table with signals.

Step 5: Choose Your Timeframe

Use the timeframe buttons (13w, 26w, 52w, 104w) to zoom in or out on the chart. Longer timeframes reveal macro trends; shorter ones show recent momentum shifts.

Position Velocity

Position Velocity measures the 4-week rate of change in each trader group's positioning. It tells you not just where traders are positioned, but how fast they're moving.

  • โ†‘โ†‘ Strong momentum โ€” Positioning is shifting rapidly in one direction
  • โ†‘ Moderate momentum โ€” Steady shift underway
  • โ€” Neutral โ€” Positioning is stable
  • โ†“ Moderate reversal โ€” Positioning is shifting back
  • โ†“โ†“ Strong reversal โ€” Rapid shift back, potential trend change

Velocity is most useful when combined with WILLCO: a high WILLCO reading with accelerating velocity is a stronger signal than a high WILLCO that's been flat for weeks.

Who Benefits from COT Data?

Swing & Position Traders

COT data is a weekly macro filter. Use it to confirm whether your multi-day or multi-week trades are aligned with institutional flow before risking capital.

Prop Firm Traders

Risk management is everything at prop firms. COT data helps you avoid trading against the smart money โ€” a common cause of blown accounts on large drawdowns.

Day Traders Looking for Context

Even intraday traders benefit from knowing the macro bias. If COT says bullish divergence, your long setups have a stronger edge than your shorts.

Market Analysts

COT data is one of the most reliable macro indicators available. Use it alongside economic calendars, technicals, and fundamentals for well-rounded market views.

How to Use COT Data in Your Trading

1. Start with the Divergence Score

Before looking at technicals for your market, check the COT Divergence Score. If it's at +60 or higher, you have a strong bullish macro backdrop. If it's at -60 or lower, the macro backdrop is bearish. Let this inform which setups you prioritize.

2. Watch for Triple Extremes

Set up a routine of checking for new Triple Extreme flags after each Friday's COT report update. These are rare and historically among the most reliable signals available.

3. Use Velocity to Time Entries

A strong Divergence Score with accelerating velocity suggests the move is just beginning. A strong Divergence Score with decelerating velocity may mean much of the move has already happened.

4. Combine with Your Technical Analysis

COT data is a macro tool โ€” it doesn't tell you exact entry and exit points. Use it to set your bias, then use technicals (support/resistance, patterns, indicators) to time your entries.

5. Be Patient โ€” COT is Weekly

COT data updates once per week. It's a strategic filter, not a day-trading tool. The signals play out over days to weeks, not minutes.
